Week 21 of #52weeksofgiving - Camp HOPE America x HAVEN

During week 21 of our #52weeksofgiving project, LeMay Family Goodworks is excited to support HAVEN in their effort to bring Camp HOPE America to New Hampshire. We will be sending 10 kids to camp this summer!

Through their innovative approach, Camp HOPE America provides summer camp experiences and year-round mentoring and educational activities to give hope to youth who need it most: those who have witnessed or been impacted by domestic violence.

HAVEN provides domestic and sexual violence prevention and support services to individuals and families throughout the NH Seacoast, with offices in Portsmouth, Epping, and Rochester.

Camp HOPE America’s partnership with HAVEN will be the first such collaboration in NH, expanding both organizations’ efforts to break the cycle of violence and provide a vision of hope and healing. On June 7th, 2022, the NH Gives event will kick off 24 hours of giving to NH nonprofits. HAVEN’s NH Gives campaign will promote and fundraise for their Camp HOPE America partnership.

Read on to learn more about Camp HOPE America’s remarkable nationwide initiative and how you can help.

About Camp HOPE America

Camp HOPE America operates under the leadership of Alliance for HOPE International, the umbrella organization for all Family Justice Centers and similar Multi-Agency Centers serving victims of domestic violence and their children throughout the United States.

Camp HOPE America is the first evidence-based camping and mentoring program in the country to focus on children and teens exposed to domestic abuse. Their mission is “to give youth a brighter future by creating pathways to hope and healing.”

Using a trauma-informed approach, Camp HOPE America works with local partner camps that also offer other weekly summer camps. Trained camp staff members oversee recreational activities, while Camp HOPE America manages specialized program activities and other therapeutic components.

How the Program Works

Children and teens first enjoy a week of camp, where campers participate in various activities, such as field games, rock climbing, tubing, high and low ropes courses, art projects, campfire songs, and so much more.

During camp, kids also read stories of people close to their own age who have overcome abuse, adversity, and other real-life challenges. They learn:

  • How to step outside their comfort zone, accomplish new things, and overcome their fears,

  • That they are not alone, and

  • That their past does not define their future.

Outside of camp, participants and their families receive year-round support through events ranging from team-building activities to college tours. Camp HOPE America also works to expose children and teens to:

  • Potential careers they wouldn’t have known about

  • STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) projects

  • Hobbies and interests

  • Positive role models and friends

Camp HOPE America intends to get their program in all 50 states to continue helping kids develop the skills, knowledge, and mindset to succeed despite the domestic abuse and obstacles they’ve faced. Most importantly, the organization aims to give youth hope, help them heal from their trauma, and create a better future for themselves.
