NH Gives 2024 Nonprofit Spotlight: Liberty House

New Hampshire’s 24 hours of giving, NH Gives, is well underway! In the giving spirit, LeMay Family Goodworks has chosen four new-to-us charities to support and spotlight this week. Today, we’re featuring our second organization, Liberty House, which offers a safe haven and assistance for veterans facing homelessness, substance misuse, and other challenges.

Liberty House correlates to our Veterans pillar. We look forward to building a connection with this wonderful New Hampshire nonprofit and helping them further their cause with hands-on work down the road! Discover their programs and how they serve those who have served our country below.

You can also learn about yesterday’s spotlight nonprofit, GoodWork, and their nonprofit incubator program.

About Liberty House

Based in Manchester, Liberty House is a Catholic Charities NH program that provides “substance-free housing and vital community connections to empower homeless and struggling veterans on their journey to independence and self-sufficiency.” This one-of-a-kind nonprofit helps veterans struggling with substance misuse, post-traumatic stress, and other mental health issues regain stability and reclaim their independence.

Liberty House stands out from other veteran support organizations through their:

  • Zero-tolerance policy—they’re the only truly sober recovery residence in New Hampshire

  • An action-oriented, transformational, substance-free residential 4-step program

  • Family-oriented community of vets helping vets to promote self-sufficiency and independence

  • Lean staffing and many volunteers—92 cents of every dollar donated goes toward veteran support services

  • Funding strategy—they won’t accept funding that would negatively affect their ability to maintain their behavioral expectations

And their efforts make a significant impact! In the past year, Liberty House reports that:

  • 224 veterans received support from Liberty House as they worked to overcome homelessness, post-traumatic stress, and other difficult pasts.

  • 71% of their residents secured meaningful employment on their path to self-sufficiency.

  • 79% of their residents completed financial fitness training, a key milestone to gaining financial independence.

Transitional Program

Liberty House provides a life-changing solution for veterans via their substance-free residential 4-step program. Residents usually stay with the program for 90 days to a year. There are also two Step-Up rooms for those who complete the program, subject to availability.

Enrolled veterans all follow the same process, with plenty of personalized support and a self-directed plan for independence. These four steps are:

  • Recovery

  • Health and Wellness Connections

  • Meaningful Employment

  • Transition to Independence

Residents also enjoy support and resources from intensive case management to peer support and accountability to Ezra the Wonder Dog, a certified facility dog—and much more! Learn more about the transitional program and how it works.

Community Veteran Resources

Additionally, Liberty House serves local veterans through their Center for Veterans, which provides a central location to access veteran resources across New Hampshire and a safe, supportive veteran-focused community environment.

The New Hampshire nonprofit also runs an on-site community pantry offering food, clothing, toiletries, camping gear, bus passes, and gas cards. Going even further, they provide:

  • Employment assistance

  • Educational workshops

  • Information and referrals

  • Recovery meetings

  • Community gatherings
