They have even added a scooter ride this year from Portsmouth to the pig roast, just for fun! Buy your tickets in advance online or at registration the morning of.

Please note: If you pre-purchase tickets, you will still need to check in and register at 7:30 a.m. to sign a waiver for the ride. Here’s how it works:

What is Patrol Base Abbate?

PB Abbate is a nonprofit veterans organization established in honor of Sergeant Matthew Abbate (uh-baa-tay), a Marine and scout sniper killed in action in 2010 during a coalition airstrike and enemy attack in Afghanistan. Sgt. Abbate was just 26 years old and was awarded the Navy Cross posthumously for his courageous and lifesaving acts on the battlefield two months earlier.

Founder Major Tom Schueman created PB Abbate to provide free programs for service members and eligible veterans to reintegrate into their communities with support and purpose. They also equip members with the right tools to reenter the fight.

While PB Abbate offers local chapters and online clubs to help Pointmen build their support networks and rediscover their purpose, the veteran nonprofit’s primary offering is the Return to Base (RTB) program. Located in Thompson Falls, Montana’s Big Sky Country, the five-day retreat allows participants to get outside and active in a stunning, peaceful setting.

Each retreat is held from a Thursday through a Monday and includes a mix of active and retired military members from one of PB Abbate’s interest-based clubs (e.g., Book, Strength, or Fight Club). Members enjoy expert-led activities such as shooting, fishing, hunting, lifting, and art. Daily activities revolve around the club’s common interest and include one to two yoga sessions.

The central pillars of the RTB programs are:

  • Service Work: During their time at the Patrol Base, members conduct a service project to improve the local area or community (e.g., clearing brush for fire prevention, building/repairing property facilities). This component prepares members for the culminating event, where they each fill a sandbag and dedicate it to someone or something back in their homes and communities. They are then recognized as PB Abbate Pointmen.

  • Fireside Chats: These loosely guided discussions provide a safe space for members to engage in vulnerable conversations rooted in empathy and trust and help one another heal.

  • Nature: RTB members enjoy the healing power of nature and fresh mountain air through activities like hiking and kayaking.
