Raise ‘Em Up Kids Club at the Pope Memorial Humane Society

The Raise ‘Em Up Kids Club was excited to visit the Pope Memorial Humane Society (PMHS) this past Monday to meet the shelter dogs and learn about scent training!

The kids crafted snuffle mats for the dogs and participated in scent training sessions in the pavilion. Matt, the amazing trainer, demonstrated techniques with a few of the dogs at the shelter, making it an interactive and educational experience. And, of course, the kids loved working with the pups. Afterward, the kiddos and parents enjoyed pizza at La Festa Brick & Brew.

The PMHS team was also super thankful the kids made so many snuffle mats for the other dogs to be able to do scent work for weeks to come! Thanks to PMHS Director of Operations Seneca Adam Bernard, Matt, and Molly for helping us organize this and sharing your time with the Raise ‘Em Up Kids Club.

About Pope Memorial Humane Society

Located in Dover, NH, PMHS is a community-funded, nonprofit, 501(c)3 organization dedicated to promoting the humane treatment of animals in Strafford County, NH, and Southern Maine. The shelter is a safe, temporary home for more than 1,000 surrendered, lost, abused, neglected, or unwanted animals each year.

PMHS offers various programs and resources to educate and engage with the community as they strive to advocate for animal health and safety, find them homes, and keep pets in their existing homes. For example, the shelter provides a pet food pantry for families in Strafford County, NH, and South Berwick, ME, going through tough times.

There is also the Safe Pets program, a unique alternative to surrendering a pet for pet parents who going through a time of transition. Safe Pets are housed in the shelter and/or placed in foster care. Available to residents of Strafford County, cases are assessed on a case-by-case basis and based on available kennel space.

PMHS also partners with Chris’ Hero Pets, a Hero Pups program, to help unite veterans with companion animals. This program eases the financial burden on veterans seeking a companion by covering part or all of their adoption fees. As the shelter states, “Chris’ Hero Pets offer a resource to more veterans who may not be looking for a support dog, but still feel they could benefit from having a companion by their side.” The program is available to all local veterans through PMHS partner shelters.
